The DEMO evening on Sunday at the venture factory was the end of the intense three-day entrepreneurship weekend, that 26 teams attended, as well as more than 20 mentors. Teams Macte Animo, "Podari Paketek", "Pohorske dobrote", an educational app, Selfiebox and Safy were the ones that most impressed the seven-member expert committee and earned the intense Start:up Maribor TURA packet.

The afternoon started like every other Tuesday of November, with a practical workshop, this time about »How to reach first customers.« Aljoša Huber, an experienced entrepreneur with experiences ranging from middle to small companies, as well as a renowned startup mentor, led the workshop.
Organizers of the Start:up Maribor programme recieved 38 applications to the intense autumn entrepreneurship programme called Start:up TURA. In the coming weekend, teams will improve their ideas and products with the help of mentors at the three day Start:up weekend.
Maribor had been an extremely well developed city economically wise. It prided itself with numerous industrial giants. After the 1990 most of those companies ceased to operate or they got restructured. There are modern business zones with many companies operating on those areas nowadays.
Maribor has a rich industrial tradition and had developed a strong base of intellectuals, industrialists and engeneers during in the time of growing prosperity of industry. That base stayed mostly intact and has ever since and until this day been the driving force behind the contemporary industrial activity in the town.
Maribor prides itself with a rich tradition of vehicle and car parts production since the times of TAM’s beginnings. Still today, the most demanding car parts and car clusters are being developed and manufactured in Maribor for the world’s biggest car manufacturers such as Citroën, Peugeot, Ford, Magna Steyr, VW, Daimler-Mercedes Benz, Iveco and others.
The innovations in the chemistry sector have enabled the development of all the industrial activities, from car to aircraft industries, and are one of the key factors in the economic development. Also, the chemical industry has a long lasting and a rich tradition here in Maribor, namely since 1887 when the production of chemical and soap products called Zlatorog started to operate.
CHEMICAL AND PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY
With the initiative of the economic organizations and expert unions, a university course called Electro-technics started in full speed in the 1960, which proves that this particular sector had already been well developed in those years. Later, this faculty grew into a modern Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science which is still to this day tightly linked with economic sector and has educated over 2000 graduates.
ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRO-TECHNICAL INDUSTRY
In order to improve the economy, in addition to the traditional »hard« infrastructure like roads, railways, water supply networks etc.. investments in the so-called soft infrastructure are also of the utmost importance. It is a fact that these new technologies, including the information and communication technologies (ICT), play the key role in the production of products with a high added value.
INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
Hardware and metal processing industry is an important part of the Maribor economy since there are several successful companies situated in Maribor who are producing top products from metal. The ‘winning horses’ of the branch are the Maribor foundry Maribor (MLM) and Palfinger. MLM has a tradition of soon to be 90 years.

Due to new trends and technologies in the construction business and in the field of building heating systems, wood is becoming a more and more strategic raw material to have, and very soon there is going to be a deficiency of it in Europe. Almost 60 percent of Slovenia is covered with forests, which is right after Finland and Sweden on the scale of the most forested countries in the EU. It has a vast developing potential in the sector.
They say that financial sector is the »vascular system« of every economy. If this statement is true, then the economy in Maribor definitely has a great »blood flow«. There are no less than 17 different banks, 8 different insurance companies and numerous other financial undertakings. The biggest financial institution in Maribor is the Nova KBM bank that also has its headquarters here in Maribor.
The tourist industry is one of the fastest growing and developing economical activities in Maribor. That is no coincidence, since the city has excellent enivronmental, geographical and social conditions. Maribor is located under the foothills of mountainous Pohorje which is a part of the Eastern Alps. On the other side, the city is surrounded with numerous smaller hills, lavishly decorated with vineyards.
Also, sports oriented people or sports enthusiasts can enjoy in Maribor. The town itself, as well as the surroundings offer: hiking and equestrian trails, adrenaline, adventure and cycling parks, ski centres, quality sports infrastructure, the best football team in Slovenia – NK Maribor, international sports events, sports and recreational centres and specialized hotels, city and mountain Wellness providers, water and air sports, sports airfield, golf etc.
